Netherlands Fibershed

Fibershed Netherlands unites Dutch textile pioneers to create a more local, circular, and regenerative textile industry.

Founded in August 2021 by Martine Nieuwenhuis and Stijntje Jaspers, Fibershed Netherlands unites Dutch textile pioneers to create a more local, circular, and regenerative textile industry. With over 45 years of combined experience, the founders stepped away from traditional fashion roles to form Fibershed NL, driven by a desire for positive change in textiles. Through learning groups, masterclasses, and innovative projects like the “Herb-to-Color” initiative, Fibershed NL empowers network members to share resources, collaborate, and drive sustainability. Their educational programs, from secondary schools to industry events, build awareness of the benefits of a bio-circular textile system.

Founded in August 2021 by Martine Nieuwenhuis and Stijntje Jaspers, Fibershed Netherlands was born out of their shared commitment to making textiles and clothing a positive force. With a combined 45 years of industry experience, Martine and Stijntje left traditional fashion roles to establish Fibershed NL, guided by the Fibershed approach to fostering locally produced, bio-circular textiles. Through its network, Fibershed NL aims to close the “Land-to-Wardrobe” loop in the Netherlands by facilitating collaboration among farmers, artisans, and designers and focusing on regenerative practices.

“We are grateful to work with so many passionate, purpose-driven people because together we are Fibershed.

Fibershed NL founders Martine Nieuwenhuis & Stijntje Jaspers.

Fibershed NL’s key activities include organizing learning groups, masterclasses, webinars, and collaborative projects that span the industry and engage future generations. For example, the Herb-to-Color project co-created a DIY plant-based dye kit that supports biodiversity, while their book, Goede Gespreksstof, and a corresponding secondary school program offer “plug & play” lessons for younger audiences.

The affiliate also engages policymakers and other stakeholders to promote bio-circular textile principles. With Fibershed Microgrant support, Fibershed NL is developing a steward-owned holding, the Natural Fiber Stewardship, to help entrepreneurs protect their purpose-driven work. Looking forward, Fibershed NL plans to expand educational outreach, advance their Herb-to-Colour project, launch a new hemp initiative, and deepen collaborations with other European Fibershed affiliates.
