Fibershed Ukraine, the network’s first Affiliate in Eastern Europe, is dedicated to reviving and popularising the ancient craft of regenerative textile production. This initiative explores traditional weaving techniques and collaborates with educational institutions to reintroduce knowledge of local yarns, inspiring artisan weavers to incorporate natural materials into their practices. Key activities focus on generating employment opportunities for artisans and farmers, while modernising and popularising textile production in Ukraine.
This year, Fibershed Ukraine has expanded its efforts to include wool, aiming to engage a wider range of artisans, students, and artists. By involving manufacturers and research institutions, the initiative seeks to raise awareness of the local textile industry and highlight its potential for development. A significant achievement has been successfully securing a grant to research and recreate the tradition of hand-loomed hemp, engaging weavers across the country in prototyping with linen and hemp yarns. This work not only reconnects artisans with their ancestral heritage but also promotes sustainable practices that can benefit local communities.
As Fibershed Ukraine continues to grow, the focus remains on fostering a collaborative environment where traditional knowledge meets modern innovation, ultimately strengthening the textile sector in Ukraine. The initiative aims to empower local communities, revitalise age-old crafts, and create a sustainable future for the Ukrainian textile industry.
